Vancouver Farmers Market Vandals

What a shame! Take a look at the article below. Myself and other employees here at Dick Says Yes LOVE visiting the Vancouver Farmer’s Market.

By Bob Albrecht Columbian staff writer

Wednesday, April 21, 2010

Vancouver, WA — “I don’t know if they’re related, but it’s sure irritating,” Judy Askelson, an office manager, said Wednesday after walking into the Vancouver Farmers Market’s trashed headquarters inside the Slocum House Theatre. The late-Tuesday, early Wednesday vandalism marked the third time the farmers market has been targeted since the season kicked off last month. “They kicked in the office door and trashed it. I mean all the bookcases were turned over, everything on the floor,” said Askelson, who discovered the damage when she arrived to work at about 9 a.m. “They stole the safe and a cash box. That was about $250.” On the morning of the market’s March 21 opening, Askelson and other staff members discovered a flat tire on their truck with a missing valve stem. It had been cut off, and it happened again a few days later. “We put up video surveillance in the trailer and we haven’t had any problems since then,” Askelson said. She said it appeared a window pane was broken on the front door of Slocum House, allowing vandals to unlock the door. The farmer’s market office was door was kicked in, she said. Askelson added that few other doors had been kicked in, but nothing else appeared to have been taken. The vandalism – irritating as it may be – hasn’t dampened organizers enthusiasm over a strong start to the market’s 20th season, characterized by an increase in vendors and an earlier than usual expansion to Sixth Street. Askelson said the crimes have been reported to police.

Gas Friendly SUV

Dick Says Yes is the home of great used vehicles for Oregon, including SUV’s! If you are on the search for a nice SUV, we know you still want the decent gas mileage. Below Samarins.com put together a short list of the best used SUV’s that are not so harsh on the wallet at the pump. Check our website for Dick Hannah’s current inventory of used SUV’s!

Just several years ago, 4-cylinder SUVs weren’t even seriously considered – a 4 cylinder engine was deemed too weak for an SUV and the gasoline wasn’t that expensive. Things have changed. Gas prices keep rising, forcing us to look for more fuel-efficient cars and SUVs. Environmental concerns are pushing us towards more environmentally-friendly vehicles. Todays 4-cylinder engines are more fuel efficient, more powerful and more durable, thanks to new technologies.

Here we selected few late-model non-hybrid 4-cylinder SUVs, that deserve top consideration if you are in the market for a used SUV with decent gas mileage.

After a successful start, HTC expanded to neighboring Springfield, OR off of Centennial Blvd. In 2003, Kekoa (the Founder) sold the restaurants to long-time customers who currently operate locations in Oregon.

In October 2009, after managing retail stores and graduating from the University of Oregon, Kawika (Kekoa’s son), decided to open a HTC of his own. Check out our website at HawaiianTimeCafe.com to see pictures of Kawika and Kekoa building the first Vancouver, WA location.

On January 6th, 2010, Hawaiian Time opened its doors in Vancouver, WA and has been serving tasty Hawaiian dishes ever since. So, if you are an old customer of the original Hawaiian Time in Eugene and missed us, “We’re Back!”

Meet the Business Owner: Kawika H.

Kawika is the owner and operator of Hawaiian Time Cafe in Vancouver, WA. He is the son of Kekoa, who founded HTC in Eugene, OR back in 1997.

Dick Hannah Planting Trees!

Did You Know That Dick Hannah Has planted over 37,000 trees, read on!!!!

It’s about LEADERSHIP. It’s about CORPORATE STEWARDSHIP.

Going green… “It’s simply a matter of doing the right thing.” Our business is that of an auto dealer. Our passion is improving the lives of our customers, our employees and those who reside in the communities we serve. As one of the largest auto dealer companies in the Northwest, we welcome our corporate responsibility to be an advocate for the best environmental practices; to set the standard and pave a path for others to follow suit.

We recognize the impending need to preserve and sustain the environment and its resources. We are more than corporate stewards. We are a collective group of people stepping up to the challenge, tackling tough issues and setting change in motion. We owe it to our employees, our customers and our community to be a trusted partner and to simply do the right thing.

The Hannah’s family roots are embedded here…As a third generation, locally owned and daily operated business, Dick Hannah Dealerships have been recently recognized by the Washington CEO publication as the 22nd largest, privately owned company in Washington State. Our roots were planted when the company opened our first dealership in downtown Vancouver in 1949.

Our commitment to being a trusted community partner has remained a constant. In our effort to become a more GREEN-BASED dealership, Dick Hannah Dealerships has utilized a top down approach with support from every level of our team. This mission has become part of our culture.

Tree Planting with every vehicle we sell…

Dick Hannah Dealerships has committed to having a tree planted with every vehicle we sell. This applies to all new and pre-owned cars and trucks throughout all of our stores. We’ve partnered with the National Arbor Day Foundation and so far tens of thousands of trees have been planted.

Dick Hannah Dealerships GREEN Task Force

As an industry leader, we commit our talent and our resources to the preservation of the environment. We are proud to have voluntary commitment from all levels within our organization to help lead the charge and we are serious about tackling these issues head on.

Our most talented resource in this effort is our people – many of whom volunteer their time as a member of the Hannah GREEN Task Force. They are the backbone of our best practices initiatives and ensure that implementation is accomplished successfully within every function of our business.

Reduction in waste and increased recycling…

Waste Connections, Inc. is a leading provider of comprehensive waste and environmental services. Dick Hannah Dealerships is proud to partner with a company that actively pursues projects and initiatives that benefit the waste industry, the communities that they serve and the environment. We are committed to

Saving Energy…

We are filling our GREEN pipeline with advanced technologies and initiatives. A valued partner in our efforts has been Clark Public Utilities. Our GREEN Task Force is working closely with Clark Public Utilities to evaluate power saving opportunities. A local representative toured the Dick Hannah Dealership facilities to conduct energy audits. Recommendations included motion sensor lights, timers and improvements for our HVAC system to lower energy consumption during non-business hours. The Energy Star planning tools are a part of our process in energy reduction.

Spring Break Road Trips!

Common phrases heard in the
back seat of a car…
“Are we there yet?!”
“I’m bored!”
“She’s touching me!”
“He won’t stay on his side!”

Road trips – got to love them! Whether you are driving around Portland/Vancouver or traveling cross country, keeping your children entertained and fed will keep them happy and you sane. Here are our favorite tips for your next road trip.

  • Games like 20 Questions or the License Plate Game (you go through the alphabet shouting out when you see the next letter in someone’s license plate until you get to the letter Z) are free and keep the kids entertained for quite a while. Also available in stores are small, portable and affordable travel games like Connect Four and Etch-a-Sketch – they are a big hit with kids old enough to play on their own.
  • Food, always a must! Some great snack ideas include juice boxes, pretzels, crackers, granola bars, apples, grapes and water bottles, all of which are much better than gas station stops stocking up on soda and candy bars.
  • Cell Phone; for emergencies, vehicle mishaps or if you get a little lost.
  • Toys; purchase one or two smaller toys for your kids – don’t tell them about it! Nothing will keep them entertained and happy like a new toy to discover and enjoy.
  • Maps are never a bad thing to keep in the glove box. Why does it seem when you have it, you never need it – but that time you don’t have it you suddenly feel like Dorothy and Kansas is nowhere in sight? Navigation systems are wonderful too – program in your destination before leaving and you will always be able to find your way.
  • Music or Stories on CD. The kids can sing along or listen along to the music they enjoy. If the Wiggles become too much for the adults, headphones are always a handy alternative! Also, consider making your own CD by reading and recording your children’s favorite stories. Your voice will help sooth and relax small children and entertain the older ones.
  • Try travel sized items. Take one bag in the vehicle containing these items so they are at your disposal as needed; baby wipes, hair combs, disposable bibs, sunscreen, first aid kit, tissues, lotion, hand sanitizer and a small first aid kit.
  • Comfort Items – If your little one has their favorite blanket or stuffed animal, make sure to bring it along. 100 miles from home is the last place you want them to remember they do not have it! Let them pack their own little bag so they feel part of the travel process and can have a few of their favorite things with them.
  • Shopping bags are handy for trash; you can easily toss the bag right into a can at the next gas station or rest stop.
